Frequently asked questions
Which glasses work with SeeMate?
Ray-Ban Meta glasses, Gen 1 and Gen 2. They connect through the Meta AI app with Developer Mode turned on. Follow the step-by-step setup.
Does it work without glasses?
Yes. Choose the iPhone camera as the source and stand your phone where it can see the whole board from your side. If the phone stays on a fixed stand, you can place the four board corners by hand for a precise fit.
Does SeeMate need internet?
No. Board recognition and the Arasan chess engine run on your iPhone, and SeeMate makes no network requests of its own. (Pairing your glasses happens in Meta's Meta AI app, which has its own requirements.)
Why aren't my moves being recognised?
- Light: play in even, bright light. Dim rooms and strong shadows make pieces hard to tell apart.
- Whole board in view: all four corners and every square should be visible.
- View from your side: look at or point the camera at the board from your side of the table, not from far off to the side.
- Avoid glare: glossy boards under a lamp can reflect light. Move the light or tilt the board.
- Recalibrate: if the arrow is drawn in the wrong place, recalibrate, or place the corners by hand when the phone is on a stand.
Still stuck? Send diagnostics right after it happens.
How do I set up a position in the middle of a game?
Open the position editor and place the pieces, or paste a FEN. You can also play moves by tapping on the 2D board. After that, SeeMate follows the game from the new position.
SeeMate recorded a wrong move. What now?
Tap undo, then make the correct move by tapping it on the 2D board. If the camera looked away and missed a few moves, SeeMate reconstructs up to six of them on its own.
How do I start a new game?
Set the pieces back to the starting position. SeeMate detects the reset and starts a new game automatically.
Can I use SeeMate in tournaments or online games?
No. Using engine help in rated, online or tournament games breaks fair-play rules (FIDE's Laws ban electronic devices in the playing venue; Chess.com and Lichess ban engine assistance). Use SeeMate for training, analysis, openings and casual games with friends who know you are using it.

Send diagnostics
When a move is missed or misread, a diagnostics file helps us see exactly what the camera saw.
- Right after the problem, open Settings → Send diagnostics in SeeMate.
- SeeMate creates a zip on your iPhone with the last ~30 seconds of camera frames (about 2 per second), the recognition log and the app version.
- The share sheet opens. Save the file to your iPhone, then mention it in your TestFlight feedback with a short note about what went wrong. We'll reply and tell you how to send it.
The frames show whatever the camera saw, which may include your hands, other people or your room. Please review them before sending.
We use diagnostics only to fix recognition problems and delete them within 90 days. See the Privacy Policy.
